General requirements

The following requirements are common to all types of visa. According to it, your application will need some other kind of documents.

Application Form DP-FO-67. Dully filled out for all the applications.
Valid Passport or travel document, in good condition, with a minimum of two blank pages.
Copy of the main page of the passport.
Copy of previous Colombian visas
Two (2) photographs, passport size, white background.
Application and Visa fees in Money Order pay to the order of Consulado de Colombia. PLEASE CHECK THE FEES ACCORDING TO THE TYPE OF VISA, IT COULD VARY.
PLEASE VERIFY SPECIFIC REQUIREMENTS. Each document MUST be original.

The length of time required to issue the visa is from 3 days to 5 days. Some visas will require even 10 days.

TYPES OF VISA AND COST

REMEMBER:

Application and visa fee must be brought in two different Money Orders, both payable to: "Consulado de Colombia en Nueva York".

Exceptions:

• U.S.A. Citizens do not pay the fee for: Business, Student and Temporary Special visas, but do pay the application fee (US$50). Nevertheless, are required to pay the fee for others visas different than the above.

• JAPANESE Citizens: no visas fees are required, but have to pay the application fee (US$50).

• SPAIN Citizens: no visas fees are required, but have to pay the application fee (US$50).

• ECUADORIAN Citizens: no visas fees are required, but have to pay application fee (US$30). For Student Visa, the application fee is US$15.

• Visas ALIANZA PACÍFICO (MEXICO, PERU and CHILE). Only those who hold executives positions and are going on business to Colombia on behalf of their company. Cost: US$80.

Courtesy

A courtesy visa may be granted to foreigners of recognized prestige or when it is considered advisable for the Colombian State.

Business

A business visa may be granted to a foreigner who is accredited as a business person, legal representative, director or executive of a foreign company who wishes to enter the country to establish a commercial presence.

Note:Unless you were HOSTING a meeting (not attending) or SIGNING any document with a legal background, you will not need a Business Visa (Countries with NO visa requirement for VISITOR entry ONLY).

A courtesy visa may be granted to foreigners of recognized prestige or when it is considered advisable for the Colombian State.

Letter in original from the employer presenting the employee, the position held, the time working for the company, the purpose of the trip and the time length. The letter must also state the responsibility of the company with the government of Colombia, to cover all the expenses and the return of the employer to his place of residence.
Certification of incorporation or legal representation of the company or a similar document, according to the country of origin. In this case, the Company's certificate from the Department of State, also referred to as a Certificate of Good Standing (ORIGINAL SHOULD NOT BE DATED MORE THAN 3
MONTHS FROM THE DATE OF APPLICATION). The certificate must be legalized,
also referred to as "APOSTILLE".
Letter from the company/client in Colombia confirming the meeting. The letter must be
signed and dated.

Crew Member

This visa may be granted to a foreign member of a crew or of an international carrier or fishing boat entering national territory.

Letter from the legal representative of the company responsible for the international
carrier, stating the activity to be undertaken and stating his/her economic responsibility for the foreigner's stay in and departure from national territory.
Certificate of existence and legal representation of the company.

In the case of a member of a fishing boat crew, in addition to the foregoing requirements, he/she must state that he/she complies with the foreign crew contracting regulations.

The respective permits to engage in fishing activity.
A member of the crew of a ship under the Colombian flag, administered by a national or foreign ship owner, must present a letter from the ship owner or the company responsible, specifying the terms of the registration contract, his/her position and suitability and attach a certificate of compliance with the crew contracting regulations.

Form DP-FO-66 “Commitment to report any change of occupation” duly filled out. In the case of exercising a regulated profession, the foreign resident as a relative of a Colombian national shall present the documents permitting him/her to practice the regulated profession, such as a certification of equivalence or validation of the professional qualification, the provisional permit or license to practice or the registration or professional card.

Qualified Resident

A qualified resident’s visa may be granted:

To a foreigner who has been a holder of a temporary visa and who has lived in national territory regularly for at least five (5) continuous, uninterrupted years and presents an application within at least the thirty (30) calendar days prior to expiration of the visa, except in the case of duly proven force majeure or act of God, or,
To a foreigner who is a father or mother of a Colombian national, or,
To a foreigner who is of age and, as beneficiary of a holder of a qualified resident’s visa, evidences an activity or source of income and has remained in national territory for a minimum of five (5) continuous and uninterrupted years at the time of requesting the visa, or,
To a foreigner who has been a holder of a temporary visa as a spouse or permanent partner of a Colombian national for a continuous, uninterrupted term of three (3) years.

The following are excepted:

Holders of the following visas: preferential, courtesy, business, crew member’s visa, visitor’s visa, temporary special category, medical treatment, to appear in administrative or judicial processes, as a cooperator or volunteer of a non-profit entity or non-government organization (NGO) and for adoption procedures.

For a foreigner who has been a holder of a temporary visa for five (5) continuous, uninterrupted years:

Certificate of migration issued by Migración Colombia, within the three (3) months prior to the date of the visa application.
Certificate of judicial or police history of the last country of residence, issued by the
competent authority no more than six (6) months earlier, except minors under 18
or over 65 years of age.
Form DP-FO-66 "Commitment to report any change of occupation" duly filled out.
In the case of practicing a regulated profession, the qualified resident foreigner must present the documents permitting him/her to practice the regulated profession, such as a certification of equivalence or validation of the professional qualification, the provisional permit or license to practice or the registration or professional card.

For a foreigner who is the father or mother of a Colombian national:

Form DP-FO-66 "Commitment to report any change of occupation" duly filled out.
Authentic copy of the civil registration of Colombian birth of the son/daughter.
Letter authenticated before a notary or Colombian consul signed by the Colombian father or mother requesting the issue of this category of visa for the foreigner and identifying in same the person economically responsible for the son/daughter. When the latter is of age, this letter may be signed by the Colombian son/daughter.
Copy authenticated before a Colombian notary or consul of the respective Colombian citizenship card.
In the case of the death of the Colombian father or mother, the foreign father or mother must present the respective death certificate, authenticated before a Colombian notary or consul and the document certifying that he or she has custody of the Colombian minor.
When both parents are foreign, they must present a letter, authenticated before a notary or Colombian consul, signed by the foreigner who holds a resident's visa, father or mother of the minor who was born in Colombia, together with an authenticated Copy of the alien's identify card and requesting the issue of this category of visa, stating who is economically responsible for the child, as well as presenting a certificate of nationality issued by the National Civil Status Registry Office.
If the qualified foreign resident practices a regulated profession, he/she must present the documents permitting him/her to practice such regulated profession, such as certification of equivalence or validation of the professional certificate, the provisional permit or license to practice of the professional registration or card.

For a foreign holder of a temporary visa as spouse or permanent partner of the Colombian national:

Certificate of migratory movement issued by Migración Colombia, within the three (3) months prior to the request for the visa.
Judicial or police record of the last country of residence issued by the competent authority no more than six (6) months earlier, except for those under 18 and over 65 years of age.
Form DP-FO-66 "Commitment to report any change of occupation" duly filled out.
Civil Colombian marriage registration or authentic copy of the judicial ruling or the minute of conciliation or of the public deed declaring the existence of the de facto marital union, as the case may be. Any of these documents must have been issued within the three (3) months prior to the visa application.
Letter authenticated before a Colombian notary or consul addressed to the corresponding office which would be responsible for granting the visa for his/her foreign spouse or permanent partner.
Copy authenticated before a Colombian notary or consul of the Colombian citizenship card.
Copy of the Colombian visas which he/she has held.
In the case of practice of a regulated profession, the qualified foreign resident must present the documents permitting him/her to practice the regulated profession, such as the certification of equivalence or validation of the professional qualification, the provisional permit or license to practice or the professional registration or card.

Resident investor

A resident investor’s visa may be granted to a foreigner who makes a direct foreign investment in his/her own name, in accordance with the International Investments Statute and other conforming rules in force at the time of the request.

In cases of direct foreign investment other than in real property:

A written communication issued by the International Exchange Department of Banco de la República certifying the registration of the direct foreign investment in the name of the foreigner requesting the visa for an amount of no less than one hundred thousand dollars (US$100,000.oo) of the United States of America.
Form DP-FO-66 "Commitment to report any change of occupation" duly filled out.
In the case of practice of a regulated profession, the foreign resident investor must present the documents permitting him/her to practice the regulated profession, such as a certification of equivalence or validation of the professional qualification, the provisional permit or license to practice or the professional registration or card.

In cases of direct foreign investment for the acquisition of real property, the following must be attached:

A written communication issued by the International Exchange Department of Banco de la
República certifying the registration of the direct foreign investment in the name of the foreigner requesting the visa for an amount of no less than two hundred thousand dollars (US$200,000.oo) of the United States of America.
Certificate of conveyance and freedom from encumbrance issued by the respective Public
Instruments Registration Office issued no more than one (1) month prior to the date of requesting the visa, certifying that the applicant is the owner of the real property, whose value corresponds to the foreign investment registered in his/her name of an amount of no less that that referred to in the foregoing paragraph.

In the case of practice of a regulated profession, the foreign resident investor must present the documents permitting him/her to practice the regulated profession, such as the certification of equivalence or validation of the professional qualification, the provisional permit or license to practice or the professional registration or card.

Temporary

Temporary Worker

This visa may be granted to a foreigner contracted by a public or private company, entity or institution or a natural person wishing to enter or remain in this country for the purposes of engaging in work in his/her specialty, to personnel transferred from abroad to occupy a specific position in a Colombian company; volunteers and missionaries who do not form part of the hierarchy of the religious entity, to a foreigner who is a member of an artistic, sports or cultural group contracted by reason of his/her activity, when it is remunerated.

Certificate of existence or registration from the entity in Colombia. If it is the case
corresponds to a private company, the certificate from the Chamber of Commerce; if it is not the case, the certificate of existence from "Ministerio del Interior y de Justicia" (Issued within the last 90 days). In some cases, financial statements from the company will be required.
Letter from the company stating the name and position of the applicant, detailed purpose of the trip, and company's commitment to assume financial responsibility for the foreigner, including his return to the country of origin or last country of residence.
Bachelor's degree. The certificate must be legalized, also referred to as "APOSTILLE".

In the case of an artistic, sports or cultural group entering Colombia to appear in a public event, the requirements are:

The contract summary form, duly filled out, signed and authenticated by the parties before a Colombian notary or consul.
Certificate of existence and legal representation or valid document accrediting the legal corporate existence, as the case may be. When the contracting party or employer is a legal person, the certificate must be issued within the three (3) months prior to applying for the visa.
List of the members of the group, including their passport numbers and nationality.
Copy or electronic information on the respective tickets for an onward journey out of
Colombia.

Temporary visa of spouse

This visa may be granted to a foreigner who has contracted valid matrimony with a Colombian national or who fulfills the requirements for a permanent partner, in accordance with present Colombian legislation.

Colombian civil registration of marriage or an authentic copy of the judicial decision, certificate of conciliation or public deed declaring the existence of the de facto marital union, as the case may be. Any of these documents must be issued within the three (3) months prior to the application for the visa.
Copy of the citizenship card of the Colombian spouse or permanent partner.
Letter from the Colombian national requesting the issuance of a visa for his/her foreign spouse or permanent partner. This letter must be authenticated through personal appearance before a Colombian notary or consul.
Form DP-FO-66 "Commitment to report any change of occupation" duly filled out.
If the foreigner is to practice a regulated profession, he/she must present documents permitting him/her to practice such profession, such as a certification of equivalence or validation of the professional qualification, permit or provisional license to practice, or the registration or professional card of the Professional Council in Colombia.
If it is considered necessary, the power to require a personal presentation and/or interview with the Colombian national may be exercised.
When the application for a visa is for a permanent partner of a Colombian national, it must be presented to a Colombian consulate, the valid document evidencing the de facto marital union according to the laws of the receiver country will be accepted. In any event, to apply for a new visa in Colombia, the foreigner must present the respective judicial decision, minute of conciliation or public deed declaring the existence of the de facto marital union, according to Colombian regulations.

Temporary Religious

This visa may be granted to a foreigner who forms part of the hierarchy of a church, confession, religious denomination, federation, confederation or association of religious ministers recognized by the competent authority and who come in order to carry out the activities involved in their cult.

Certification issued by the Colombian Ministry of the Interior and Justice or the person acting in its stead or by the Archdiocese or Diocese, as the case may be, stating that the church, confession or religious denomination or its federation, confederation or association of religious ministers, are duly inscribed or registered.
Certification issued by the legal representative or hierarchical superior of the religious community, specifying the mission which the foreigner is coming to carry out and indicating his/her relationship with the religious entity.
Letter from the legal representative or hierarchical superior of the religious entity through which he/she undertakes before the Colombian Government to pay all the expenses during the foreigner's stay in Colombia and those of his/her departure from same or, when cancellation of the visa, deportation or expulsion is appropriate.
Documents evidencing the economic solvency of the religious entity or of the foreigner, as the case may be.

Temporary Student

A temporary student’s visa may be granted to a foreigner intending to study in public or private educational establishments recognized by the Colombian National Government, for a minimum of ten (10) hours per week, under a student exchange program or for work practice or internship as an academic requirement of the study program.

Copy of the admission or registration certificate issued by the educational establishment; or an authentic copy of the agreement between the sponsor entity and the educational establishment under which the latter assumes the commitment to accept the student covered by an inter-institutional agreement in the case of exchange students.
Copy of the resolution recognizing the legal corporate existence of the educational establishment and, if necessary, its operating license and registration with the competent educational authority of the study program to be taken by the student, and also in the case of a private institution which only provides informal education or also denominated education for work and human development. Official educational centers are exempt from this requirement.
A letter from the person with economic responsibility for the foreigner and documents showing the economic solvency or the holder or his/her parents or legal representative, or of the person guaranteeing the expenses of his/her stay in Colombia. Credit cards may be accepted as economic solvency by attaching the bank statement or similar document evidencing that the quota assigned is sufficient for the student's subsistence.
Certification or evidence of the international body, public or private entity which granted the student's scholarship. Likewise, the certificate of economic solvency of the holder or of the parents when the grant or scholarship is partial.
Authorization of the parents and designation of the person responsible for the student during
his/her stay in this country, authenticated by a Colombian notary or consul in the case of minors. In such cases, the application, proxy or authorization, as the case may be, may be signed solely by his/her parents. In the absence of parents, the person responsible for the custody or personal care of the minor may sign. If the parents are not in national territory, the signature must be that of the person duly authorized by them or the corresponding authority.
In the case of a student/intern, a document certifying that work practice or internship is an academic requirement of the study program.
In cases of studies other than primary, secondary, technical, technological or university level, whether undergraduate, post graduate, master's, diploma or university courses, a certification or document of the respective establishment, stating that the timetable is a minimum of ten (10) hours per week, must be presented.

Special temporary

Medical treatment

This visa may be granted to a foreigner who requires medical treatment which cannot be given within the terms of the visitor’s visa or entry permit.

Administrative or Judicial Proceedings

Owner of Real property

A partner or owner of a commercial establishment or of a commercial company duly incorporated and registered with the respective chamber of commerce and with domicile in Colombia, or as an owner of real property, with proof of its acquisition through investment made in his/her name in accordance with the international exchange regime in force at the time of the application.

Certificate of existence and legal representation issued by the Colombian Chamber of Commerce within the three (3) months prior to the application for the visa, certifying that the foreigner is a member or owner of a duly incorporated and registered commercial establishment or of a commercial company, stating a registered capital or asset owned by the visa holder of a value of no less than the equivalent of one hundred (100) minimum legal monthly wages in force. In the case of a corporation (sociedad anónima), a certificate of the share structure, signed by the fiscal auditor, specifying the value of the shares owned by the applicant foreigner, which may not be less than one hundred (100) minimum legal monthly wages in force.
Balance sheets of the company, duly certified by a public accountant and, when necessary, by a fiscal auditor, attaching a valid digital certificate issued by the Central Board of Auditors and, if appropriate, a Copy of the respective company's income tax return for the previous tax year.

The following must be attached in the case of an owner of real property:

A written communication issued by the International Exchange Department of Banco de la
República certifying the registration of direct foreign capital for the purchase of real properties in the name of the foreigner applying for the visa for an amount of not less that one hundred thousand dollars (US$100,000.oo) of the United States of America.
Certificate of a certificate of conveyance and freedom from encumbrance issued by the respective Public Instruments Office, issued no more than one (1) month earlier, certifying that the applicant is the owner of a property in national territory of a value corresponding to the registered investment, which may not be less that the amount referred to in the foregoing point.

Pensioner's Visa

This visa may be granted to a foreigner who receives a pension equivalent to no less than the equivalent of three (3) minimum legal monthly wages in force.

Certification issued by a competent authority, government, public or private company or foreign or Colombian entity that the foreigner receives a pension of no less than the equivalent of three (3) minimum legal monthly wages in force, which, if it is from abroad, must be authenticated before the Colombian consul or have an apostille, as the case may be.
In the absence of the requirement for an apostille or legalization of the above document, the diplomatic mission or consulate of the foreigner's country or where the pension was obtained, accredited before the Colombian Government, may certify that the foreigner receives a pension from a public or private entity of that country of an amount no less than the equivalent of three (3) minimum legal monthly wages in force.

Cooperator or volunteer of a non-profit entity or NGO

A visa may be granted to a foreigner whose intention is to enter this country as a cooperator or volunteer of a non-profit entity or non-government organization (NGO), or a person who has been duly presented by an international organization or a diplomatic mission.

Letter signed by the legal representative of the non-profit entity or non-government organization, stating the activity which the foreigner comes to engage in while in Colombia or the work program that he/she is to carry out, specifying its duration, planned agenda, the public and private institutions and entities with which he/she is to be interviewed, as the case may be. Likewise, the experience and suitability of the foreigner for the activities he/she is to undertake in this country must be documented.
For the visa to authorize the practice of a regulated profession, the foreigner must present the documents permitting him/her to practice the respective profession, such as a certification of equivalence or validation of the professional qualification before the corresponding authority and/or the respective professional certificate or card.
Letter from the entity applying for the visa stating that it assumes the obligation to the National Government to pay all the respective expenses during his/her stay in and departure from the country.
Certificate of existence and legal representation of the non-profit entity or non-government organization, issued by the competent Colombian authority, within the three (3) months prior to presentation of the application for the visa and, if necessary, the document of registration with the respective national authorities.
When the non-profit entity or the NGO has no office in Colombia, the party interested in the visa must present a certified copy of the deed of incorporation and representation, or of the instrument accrediting its existence and representation, duly translated into Spanish and authenticated by the corresponding Colombian consulate and legalized or with an apostille, as the case may be, certifying that the said organization has existed for no fewer than five (5) years as of the date of its incorporation, or proof that its status is that of consultant of the United Nations Economic and Social Council.
When the non-profit entity or NGO has an office in Colombia, the interested party may present an authenticated Copy of the respective document certifying the legal representation issued by the competent authority.

Adoption procedures

This visa may be granted to a foreigner who is carrying out adoption procedures in Colombia.

Letter of request from the adoptive parents.
Copy or electronic information on the respective tickets for an onward journey out of

Independent work or activities

This visa may be granted to a foreigner intending to enter Colombia for the purposes of engaging in independent work or activities which do not unduly affect public space.

Letter of request of the interested party stating the activity to be engaged in while in Colombia.
Documents evidencing that his/her economic capacity is sufficient for the activity he/she carried out.
Documents evidencing his/her suitable qualification for the activity to be engaged in.
Authorization or registration of the foreigner's activity, issued by the respective regulatory entity when appropriate.
Document certifying the address of the place where the activity or work is to be carried out, such as an authentic copy of the RUT or certification of existence and legal representation, issued by the respective Chamber of Commerce.

Refugees or persons granted asylum

This visa may be granted to a foreigner who requires medical treatment which cannot be given within the terms of the visitor’s visa or entry permit.

Copy of the Colombian Ministry of Foreign Relations' resolution recognizing the person's status as a refugee or having been granted asylum.
Form DP-FO-66 "Commitment to report any change of occupation" duly filled out.
In the case of practicing a regulated profession, the foreigner who is a refugee or has been granted asylum must present the documents permitting him/her to practice a regulated profession, such as a certification of equivalence or validation of the professional qualification, the provisional permit or license to practice, or the registration or professional card.

Temporary visitor

This visa may be granted to foreigners who wishes to enter Colombia, with no intention of remaining here, in order to undertake journalistic activities to cover a special event, that is, journalists, reporters, cameramen, photographers, or persons who form part of the journalist’s team and accredit their capacity as such; to make contacts and carry out commercial or entrepreneurial activities, to participate in academic activities, seminars, conferences, symposia, exhibitions; informal courses or studies, which do not in any case exceed one academic semester; to hold interviews in a process of selection of personnel in public or private entities; for medical treatment; for unpaid sporting, scientific, artistic or cultural events; for foreigners coming to receive or provide training for public or private entities. In any event, no labor related relationship may be involved.

Technical visitor

This visa may be granted to the foreigner who intends to enter this country in order to provide urgent technical services to public or private entities, following prior presentation of a letter from the entity assuming the respective responsibility and justifying the urgency of the service required.

GENERAL FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

1. A Colombian citizen can apply for an American visa in the Consulate of Colombia? May the consulate help in the process?

No. The Consulate of Colombia issues visas just for those foreigners who want to enter the country. The Consulate cannot interfere or help in the process to get a visa to come to the United States or any other country.

2. Do I need an appointment to apply for a visa?

No, it is not necessary. You may come in our open times and be attended. The Visas Section is open Monday to Friday from 8.00 am to 1.45pm. We are going to be closed some holidays, so please check our web site to get to know.

3. May I send all my documents for the application via regular mail or email? Can somebody else give them in my name?

No. The applicant must come in person as he/she will be interviewed and the documents will be evaluated.

4. Where can I find the application form DP-FO-67 and the others mentioned in the requirements?

All the forms are available on the web site of the Consulate www.consuladodecolombiany.com, Visas Section.

5. Do I have to leave my passport? How long does it take to be my visa issued?

We do need your passport as the visa needs to be pasted. The issuance of your visa will take 3 to 5 days, and according to your country and purpose of your trip, it can take almost 10 days. Please verify your country in the list.

6. How long do I have to wait to be attended and the interview?

It takes 30 to 60 minutes to be attended. The interview is not going to take more than 20 minutes.

7. May I apply for the visa at the Consulate, even if I do not live in the area around the Consulate?

Yes. The most important thing is to have all your documents in order.

8. How can I get my residency in Colombia?

It is a process. As a requirement, the residency can be given after being living in Colombia for more than 5 years and have a valid temporary visa. Those who are trying to apply cannot leave the country for more than six months.

9. May I apply for my Cédula de Extranjería at the Consulate?

No. it has to be requested at Migración Colombia in any of its offices in the country. At the Consulate, we are able to give you the list of its locations. Also, you can visit Migración Colombia's web site (http://www.migracioncolombia.gov.co)
